Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) is one of the most frequently bought solvents in India because it spans cleaning, disinfection, electronics, printing, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical processing all at once.

The buying difficulty is rarely about finding a rate.

It is about making sure the quotation matches the correct grade, because 99% technical IPA, 70% aqueous IPA, pharmacopoeia (IP/BP/USP) grade, and low-residue electronic grade are very different products that are easy to compare incorrectly.

Getting the grade brief right before the RFQ is what separates a clean IPA purchase from a costly mismatch.

Start With the Exact IPA Grade

The most common IPA sourcing mistake is requesting "IPA" without stating which grade the operation actually needs.

A quote for 99% anhydrous IPA, 70% aqueous IPA, pharmacopoeia grade, or electronic grade can look commercially similar in an email

while being operationally very different once the material reaches the line.

A stronger RFQ defines the end use, the target assay, the acceptable water content, and whether the batch feeds regulated, electronics, or general industrial work.

That single step usually improves quote quality and removes back-and-forth before supplier evaluation even begins.

99% vs 70% vs Pharma vs Electronic: Compare Like With Like

99% anhydrous IPA is the general workhorse for surface cleaning, printing, and formulation

where low moisture matters. 70% aqueous IPA is the standard for disinfection because the water content actually improves its antimicrobial action, so it is a deliberate specification and not a diluted version of 99%.

Pharmacopoeia grade (IP, BP, or USP) is required where the material touches pharmaceutical manufacturing and must meet monograph limits.

Electronic grade is filtered and controlled for low non-volatile residue and low metal content for semiconductor and PCB cleaning.

Procurement delays happen when these grades are compared as if interchangeable.

If the user team has not agreed on the acceptable grade before RFQ release, the desk ends up comparing prices that do not represent the same technical product.

One standard grade brief across all RFQs is the fastest way to avoid that trap.

  • For disinfection, confirm 70% is the intended target, not a substitute for 99%

Why Buyers Move From Ethanol to IPA (and When Not To)

A recurring reason buyers evaluate IPA is that it sits outside the potable-alcohol excise and state-licensing framework that ethanol falls under in India.

For cleaning and disinfection programs, that can make IPA simpler to procure and administer than denatured or undenatured ethanol,

which is a genuine operational consideration rather than only a price one.

That said, IPA is not a universal drop-in. Ethanol may still be preferred

where a specific formulation, regulatory monograph, odour profile, or downstream compatibility requires it.

The right call is to compare IPA and ethanol on application fit first and administrative overhead second, rather than switching purely on headline rate.

  • Confirm your application does not specifically require ethanol before switching
  • Compare on application fit and total handling effort, not only price per litre

COA, MSDS, TDS, and Compliance Checks

For IPA, the assay number is only the starting point.

Buyers should confirm water content, appearance, odour where relevant, and, for sensitive uses, residue-on-evaporation and non-volatile matter.

This matters most when the material feeds electronics cleaning, regulated manufacturing, or high-repeat operating programs where batch drift is expensive.

IPA is a flammable liquid with a low flash point, so it also carries hazardous-goods handling and storage requirements.

At minimum, ask for a recent lot-level COA, MSDS, and TDS before commercial closure, and confirm packaging and transport documentation align with flammable-liquid rules.

IPA buying should not be reduced to price per litre or price per kilogram.

Packaging format, dispatch reliability, and documentation speed have a direct effect on receiving efficiency and production continuity, and flammable-liquid logistics add their own constraints.

For many plants, a slightly higher but cleaner and better-documented supply setup is worth more than a low quote with weak execution.

For recurring procurement, use a scorecard covering technical fit, document readiness, response speed, and delivery performance.

Keeping a primary and a backup approved source is especially useful for IPA because it is consumed frequently and operations cannot easily absorb re-sourcing delays.

  • Compare suppliers on delivered reliability, not only headline price
