Sulphuric Acid (also spelled sulfuric acid) is one of the most widely used industrial chemicals in the world, and in India it feeds fertilizer production, batteries, metal processing, textiles, detergents, water treatment, and chemical synthesis.

Because it is sold in several concentrations and grades, and because concentrated acid is both hazardous and regulated, the procurement challenge is less about finding a rate and more about matching the exact concentration, grade, documentation, and handling profile to the application.

Start With Concentration and Grade

The most common sourcing mistake is asking for "sulphuric acid" without stating the concentration and grade.

Commercial concentrated acid (typically around 98%), a dilute solution at a specified strength, battery grade, and oleum are operationally very different, and a quotation that does not name the exact form is difficult to compare fairly.

A stronger RFQ defines concentration, grade, intended application, and any purity limits that matter for the end use.

That step alone usually improves quote quality and prevents a mismatch being discovered only after the material reaches the plant.

98% vs Dilute vs Battery Grade vs Oleum: Compare Like With Like

Concentrated commercial acid at around 98% is the general workhorse for many industrial duties.

Dilute solutions are supplied at defined strengths for processes that need a specific concentration.

Battery grade is a tighter-purity specification for lead-acid batteries, where contaminants such as iron are controlled to protect battery performance.

Oleum is fuming sulphuric acid containing dissolved SO3 and is selected where a higher effective acid strength is needed, for example in sulfonation.

Procurement delays happen when these are compared as if they are the same product.

If the user team has not agreed on the required concentration and grade before RFQ release, the desk ends up comparing quotes that do not represent the same technical material.

Raising licensing, documentation, and handling questions before issuing the purchase order avoids problems at dispatch and receiving.

Sulphuric acid is highly corrosive and releases significant heat when mixed with water, so material-of-construction compatibility for packaging and storage, and safe dilution practice (always adding acid to water, never the reverse), must be planned before the material arrives.

A slightly higher but compliant and well-documented supply setup is usually worth more than a low quote with weak safety or execution support.

For recurring procurement, use a scorecard covering technical fit, safety and document readiness, response speed, and delivery performance.

Keeping a primary and backup approved source is valuable for a high-volume acid where operations cannot absorb re-sourcing delays.
